A profound shadow of grief has descended upon Kalukhali village in Narail Sadar Upazila after a woman gave birth to seven children, none of whom survived.
Salma Begum, wife of Mohsin Molya, went into premature labor on Monday. She was rushed to Jashore Medical College Hospital, where she delivered seven infants—three daughters and four sons—via normal delivery over the course of two days.
The delivery began on Tuesday with the birth of the first child, who died shortly after. A second child born later that night also passed away and was buried in Jashore. On Wednesday night, the remaining five children were born, but they too failed to survive due to extreme physical immaturity.
On Thursday morning, six of the infants were laid to rest side-by-side in the family graveyard in Kalukhali.
The couple had been waiting 10 years to expand their family. "It is impossible to describe the pain of burying so many children at once," said Latif Molya, the children’s grandfather.
Local educators noted that while multiple births are rare in the region, the infants were born significantly before their due date, leaving them unable to survive outside the womb. Salma Begum remains under medical supervision at Jashore Medical College Hospital.
