The Bangladesh government has ordered the deployment of the army in six districts, including Dhaka, to maintain law and order until June 30. The decision was announced in an urgent directive issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday, June 22.
According to the ministry, the deployment aims to prevent sabotage, chaos, and illegal showdowns by banned organizations that pose a risk to public safety and property. Army personnel will operate under 'In Aid to Civil Power' in the Dhaka, Chittagong, and Gazipur Metropolitan Areas, as well as Narayanganj, Gopalganj, and Faridpur districts.
Simultaneously, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has blanketed the capital with tight security ahead of the foundation anniversary of the banned Awami League on June 23.
The DMP announced that over 18,000 personnel will be deployed in the field. Special police pickets and checkposts will be set up at more than 200 strategic locations and city entry points to prevent any untoward incidents.
Specialized units, including the Detective Branch (DB) and the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, will provide round-the-clock surveillance. Plainclothes officers from the Special Branch (SB) are also conducting intelligence operations to foil advance sabotage plots.
Furthermore, 15 Quick Response Teams (QRTs) and standby forces across four main control rooms remain ready for immediate action. Senior police officials, including the DMP Commissioner, will directly supervise field operations to ensure public safety.
