A major winter storm has struck parts of the United States, killing at least 17 people and leaving more than 770,000 households without power. The storm has disrupted travel, closed schools, and frozen roads across multiple states.

Deaths have been reported in New York, Tennessee, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Kansas, Pennsylvania, and Texas, including a 16-year-old girl killed in a sledding accident. Over 10,000 flights have been cancelled or delayed nationwide.

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey said on Monday that snowfall of 1–5 inches is expected on top of the one to two feet already recorded. She warned that roads remain dangerous, wind chills are severe, and residents should stay indoors if possible. She noted that the power grid has largely held up, and few outages were reported in the state.

Mississippi remains heavily affected, with 153,177 households without power. Mayor Robyn Tannehill of Oxford urged caution on icy roads and reminded residents that local warming shelters are available, particularly for the elderly.

In Tennessee, about 247,300 households remain without power. Nashville Rescue Mission is sheltering more than 800 homeless people, with extra cots added in the chapel. Roads are icy, fallen trees and power lines are blocking streets, and four-wheel-drive vehicles are struggling to navigate.

Across the country, the worst-hit states in terms of power outages include Tennessee (247,300), Mississippi (153,620), Louisiana (121,401), Texas (62,375), Kentucky (44,274), South Carolina (36,359), Georgia (27,610), and Virginia (20,940).

Authorities continue to work on restoring power, clearing roads, and supporting vulnerable populations. Snowfall is expected to ease Monday, but central and eastern US regions will remain bitterly cold.
