Speaker of the National Assembly Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram stated on Thursday that there are no major differences between the government and the opposition regarding the implementation of the "July Charter."
Speaking to journalists at the Bhola Circuit House he suggested that minor disagreements are merely political maneuvering and expressed confidence in a future compromise.
"Both sides agree that the 'mafia system' of the past must never return" the Speaker said. He emphasized that the July Charter would be implemented through constitutional amendments in the coming days.
Speaker Hafiz asserted that only elected representatives have the legal right to amend the constitution. He criticized the previous interim government’s approach arguing that a few individuals cannot change the state's fundamental law. "The people's representatives chosen by vote are the ones who decide the country's fate" he added.
Regarding the majority party, the BNP the Speaker noted that while they have signed the July Charter and committed to its implementation in Parliament they have submitted 'notes of dissent' on specific points. He clarified that if the public mandate supports these views the party has the right to act on them.
Reflecting on the previous interim administration led by Professor Muhammad Yunus the Speaker remarked that despite the leader's global reputation a lack of administrative experience led to economic challenges and public health issues such as vaccine shortages. However, he credited the interim government and the Bangladesh military for successfully organizing a fair national election.
Earlier the Speaker received a guard of honor upon arriving in Bhola for a three-day visit before attending a reception in his Lalmohan constituency.
