Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar has accused the government of acting inconsistently regarding its constitutional commitments and reform proposals.
Speaking at a view-exchange meeting at the Thakurgaon Manab Kalyan Parishad hall on Saturday, Porwar alleged that the ruling party is picking and choosing which mandates to follow to suit its own interests.
Porwar noted that while the government publicly supports 84 reform proposals and the "July Charter," it remains evasive on the issue of a referendum.
"They claim they will implement the July Charter word-for-word, including dissent notes, yet they refuse to accept a referendum verdict in the same manner," Porwar said. He argued that this contradiction suggests the government’s initial support for these reforms was merely a tool to secure power rather than a genuine commitment to democratic processes.
On the topic of elections, the Secretary General confirmed that Jamaat-e-Islami intends to participate in upcoming local government polls. He criticized the government’s refusal to hold local elections prior to national polls and condemned the recent appointment of administrators to city corporations.
"Appointing selected party loyalists to elected bodies like city corporations is a violation of the constitution," Porwar stated. "It proves the government is deviating from the path of democracy."
The meeting was chaired by District Jamaat Ameer Professor Belal Uddin Prodhan. Other attendees included Assistant Secretary General Maulana Abdul Halim and District Secretary Mohammad Alamgir. Following the conference, Porwar departed for Panchagarh to attend further party activities.
