The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested former Jubo Dal leader Moin Uddin and six associates in connection with a high-profile extortion case involving the Center for Kidney Diseases and Urology (CKD) Hospital in Shyamoli.
Wing Commander MZM Intekhab Chowdhury, Director of RAB’s Legal and Media Wing, confirmed the arrests on Monday morning. Alongside Moin, the identified suspects include Md. Falan Mia (42), Md. Rubel (42), Md. Sumon (36), and Md. Liton Mia (38).
The arrests follow a case filed by Abu Hanif, the hospital’s Operation Theater in-charge, at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. According to the statement, Moin and his associates had been demanding Tk 5 lakh from Hanif for an extended period.
The situation escalated on April 10 when the suspects allegedly stormed Hanif’s residence. When his wife refused to pay, the group mobilized a crowd of nearly 60 people to picket CKD Hospital. The mob chanted death threats against the hospital's founder, renowned transplant surgeon Dr. Md. Kamrul Islam, and attempted to disrupt emergency medical services.
RAB-2 and RAB-4 conducted joint operations to apprehend the suspects after they were identified as the primary instigators of the chaos. The accused have since been handed over to Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police for further legal proceedings.
