To ensure no land remains uncultivated and to resolve long-standing waterlogging issues, a major canal re-digging project has been launched in Ranishankail Upazila.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Khadija Begum officially inaugurated the program at the Jaogaon bridge premises on Saturday.
The project, spanning from Bhandgram Mouja to the Jaogaon Bridge in Nandua, is being implemented at a cost of approximately Tk 1.07 crore. It falls under the Employment Generation Program for the Poorest (EGPP) for the 2025-2026 fiscal year, managed by the Department of Disaster Management.
Local farmers expressed relief, noting that the silted canal had previously caused flooding in the monsoon and irrigation shortages during the dry season. Once completed, hundreds of acres will be freed from waterlogging, allowing for an "agricultural revolution" in the area.
UNO Khadija Begum highlighted that the initiative serves a dual purpose: providing immediate employment for the jobless while securing the nation’s food production.
Upazila Project Implementation Officer (PIO) Nurunnabi Sarkar assured that the work would be completed with full transparency to ensure long-term benefits for the community.
