Australia will appoint its first female army chief, marking a historic moment in the country’s military history. The government has named Lieutenant General Susan Coyle as the new Chief of Army, with her term set to begin in July.
Currently serving as Chief of Joint Capabilities, Coyle will replace Lieutenant General Simon Stewart.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said, “From July, we will have a female army chief for the first time in the 125-year history of the Australian Army.” Defence Minister Richard Marles described the appointment as a “historic moment.”
Marles said Coyle’s leadership will inspire women currently serving in the Australian Defence Force and encourage future recruits.
Coyle, 55, joined the army in 1987 and has held several senior command roles. She will also be the first woman to lead any service branch of the Australian military.
Women currently make up about 21% of the Australian Defence Force and 18.5% of senior leadership roles. The force aims to increase women’s participation to 25% by 2030.
