In a bid to accelerate digital payments and reduce cash dependency, Bangladesh Bank has taken steps to introduce person-to-person (P2P) transactions using Bangla QR codes.

In a recent letter, the central bank instructed banks, Mobile Financial Services (MFS), and Payment Service Providers (PSPs) to create specific QR code generation features within their apps for P2P transactions.

Additionally, central bank guidelines require financial institutions to enable users to scan or upload P2P QR codes sent by others. Financial institutions including banks, MFS, and PSP providers have been advised to be fully prepared to launch the facility starting November 1, 2026.

Meanwhile, the Payment Systems Department of Bangladesh Bank confirmed that Bangla QR-based P2P transactions will officially come into effect from October 1, 2026. At present, daily transactions through Bangla QR range between 50 to 60 crore taka. Officials expect transaction volumes to multiply rapidly following the launch of the new feature at the beginning of October.
