‘End of Oak Street’ targets ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ at the box office

Two new films, ‘The End of Oak Street’ and ‘PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie’, are hitting North American theatres this weekend, hoping to slow down the huge box-office run of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’.

Warner Bros.’ sci-fi survival film ‘The End of Oak Street’ will open in around 3,400 theatres. The studio expects it to earn between $18 million and $23 million in its opening weekend. The film stars Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella and Christian Convery and has an $80 million production budget.

Directed by David Robert Mitchell, the movie follows a family in the early 1980s whose suburban neighbourhood suddenly finds itself surrounded by prehistoric predators. The film has received an 82% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, with early reviews describing it as entertaining and original.

For younger audiences, ‘PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie’ is opening in more than 3,500 theatres. Paramount expects the animated film to make somewhere in the mid-to-high teens domestically. It has already earned more than $27 million internationally.

The movie follows the familiar PAW Patrol characters as they find themselves in a world filled with dinosaurs. It features voice performances from Carter Young, Mckenna Grace, Terry Crews, Jennifer Hudson and Snoop Dogg. The film currently has an 85% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Meanwhile, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is expected to remain at No. 1 for a third consecutive weekend. Sony expects the Tom Holland-led blockbuster to push its domestic total past $700 million soon.

The film is also closing in on the $1.9 billion worldwide mark reached by Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021, continuing its record-breaking run.

The strong performances of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, The Odyssey, Toy Story 5 and other major releases have also helped the 2026 summer box office surpass $4 billion. It is only the second summer since the COVID-19 pandemic to reach that level, after 2023’s Barbie and Oppenheimer-driven season.

Other new releases this weekend include ‘The Rivals of Amziah King’, starring Matthew McConaughey, and Kristen Stewart’s comedy ‘The Wrong Girls’.
