Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has described the toxic gas leak at Ferdous Steel Shipbreaking Yard in Sitakunda as a "deeply tragic accident."

The minister made the remarks on Friday (August 14) afternoon while visiting Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) to offer condolences to the families of the deceased workers and inquire about the medical treatment of the injured.

"An investigation committee is being formed regarding this incident. Action will be taken based on the findings of the committee's report. There is no question of taking sides here; the government's responsibility is to investigate and reveal the exact facts," Minister Chowdhury stated.

He announced that the Bangladesh Ship Breakers and Recyclers Association (BSBRA) will provide BDT 10 lakh to the family of each deceased worker, alongside additional financial support from the government.

He also informed that a team from the Bangladesh Army has reached the scene and is working to plug and seal the gas leak.

Highlighting the administration's broader policy focus, the minister added, "Since taking office, this government has been emphasizing industrial compliance. The Hong Kong Convention provides grading for green shipbreaking yards and issues certifications. As the government, it is our duty to check if there were any compliance lapses, and if so, necessary action will be taken."
