At least 30 people, including many students and young visitors were killed in a deadly crush at Citadelle Laferrière, a UNESCO World Heritage site in northern Haiti.
The disaster occurred on Saturday, April 11, during a large gathering at the 19th-century fortress.
Initial reports indicate the stampede began at a single entrance as crowds scuffled while trying to enter and exit the site simultaneously. Local reports suggest the event was heavily advertised on TikTok, drawing an unexpectedly large crowd.
Panic reportedly spread following rumors of police using tear gas to break up a fight, while heavy rain further complicated the situation.
Haitian Culture Minister Emmanuel Menard confirmed the death toll and stated that the fortress will remain closed indefinitely. Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé expressed deep solidarity with the victims' families, noting that rescue teams are still searching for those reported missing.
This tragedy occurs as Haiti struggles with severe gang violence and a deteriorating economy. The country was recently hit by a sharp spike in fuel prices up to 37% for diesel linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
This incident adds to a long list of disasters for the nation, which has faced multiple fuel explosions and devastating earthquakes in recent years.
