A 25-year-old man was stabbed to death in public on Thursday night in the Sagarika area of Chattogram.
The incident occurred between 7:30 pm and 8:00 pm at the gate of the E-Tech Group factory in the Sagarika Bitak area under Pahartali Police Station.
The victim was identified as Akash Das, who worked as a helper in the solder section of the factory. He lived in a rented house near Fakir Bari on Pahartali College Road and is survived by two children.
According to his brother Sagar Das, Akash left home for work after dinner. When he reached the factory gate, he saw his colleague Michael being attacked by several local youths, including Ratul, Emon, Mohsin and Nazmul. Akash stepped in to help. During the scuffle, he was stabbed and collapsed on the spot.
However, an eyewitness, who requested anonymity, gave a different account. He said Akash had a long-standing dispute with the attackers, allegedly linked to a personal matter. The argument reportedly began near the post office beside the Pahartali Customs Academy and continued to the factory gate, where one of the youths stabbed him.
Akash was first taken to Al Amin Hospital and later referred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Assistant Commissioner of City Police Ruhul Amin Labu said CCTV footage shows Akash being stabbed during an argument with several youths. Police have identified some suspects and are conducting raids to arrest them. “The motive will be confirmed after the suspects are detained,” he said.
