Hundreds of residents and farmers in Bhandara Union held a mass human chain and sit-in on Tuesday to protest a surge in livestock theft that has crippled the local agricultural economy.

Protesters blocked the Sujanagar-Pabna road, demanding immediate police intervention after reporting that over 100 cows and 10 goats have been stolen from approximately 40 households in the Koladi area over the last year and a half.

The demonstration stretched from Bara Battala and Charabatala to Seoli Bazar. Thousands of locals participated, carrying placards and chanting slogans demanding "direct action" against thieves. The road blockade caused significant traffic congestion until police arrived and provided assurances that the perpetrators would be arrested.

Allegations of Negligence and "Influential" Circles Local speakers expressed frustration over police inaction, alleging that despite providing evidence and filing complaints, no arrests have been made.

Theft Patterns: Residents claim that since August 5, the frequency of thefts has increased significantly, reaching levels not seen in 17 years.

Armed Gangs: Farmers reported that despite organizing local night guards, thieves are now arriving with weapons to carry out raids.

Collusion: Protesters alleged that certain influential local figures are collaborating with outside criminal gangs to facilitate these thefts.

For many in the region, livestock represents their primary source of income and savings. Speakers at the event, including community elders and anti-discrimination student leaders, noted that many families have been left "helpless" and "silent" by the loss of their assets.

The protest organizers issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the authorities to apprehend the suspects, warning of "larger programs" if the police fail to take effective action.

Livestock theft remains a critical issue in rural Bangladesh; in the Sujanagar-Pabna region, residents have specifically noted an uptick in armed robberies targeting cowsheds since the political transition in August 2024.
