A young man named Joydev Debnath (21) lost his life while trying to cure his disabled son through jharfhunk due to superstition in Atrai upazila of Naogaon. It has been alleged that a certain Kabiraj wrapped a poisonous snake around Joydev's neck during jharfhunk, causing him to die of a snake bite.
On Saturday (January 3) afternoon, the police recovered the body of the deceased and sent it to the morgue for autopsy. Earlier, this sensational incident took place in Tilabduri village of the upazila on Friday night. The deceased Joydev is the son of Nimai Debnath of that village. Relatives said that a Kabiraj from Manda area was tempting Joydev, who was born with a disability, to cure him. On his advice, the village organized a begging ceremony to raise rice and organize the 'Behula-Lakshindarer Gaan'. On the second day of the event, Friday, at around 2:30 am, Kabiraj wrapped a poisonous snake around Jaydev's neck while he was singing. The snake bit him shortly after. After that, Kabiraj tried to calm him down for a long time but failed, and Jaydev died that night. Seeing the situation getting worse, Kabiraj quickly fled the area. The deceased's brother-in-law Furin Debnath said that Kabiraj had assured us that if he calmed him down through singing, Jaydev would recover. But the snake wrapped itself around his neck turned out to be the worst. The deceased's father Nimai Debnath said that he did not know the name, address or phone number of that Kabiraj. However, he believes that his son died due to a snake bite.
Atrai Police Station (OC) Md. Abdul Karim said that after receiving the news, the body was recovered and sent to the morgue for an autopsy. The deceased's father has filed a UD (untimely death) case in this incident. The real cause of death can be confirmed after receiving the autopsy report and further legal action will be taken accordingly. Investigating officer SI Sahazul Islam said that a black wound mark was found on the deceased's body, which is believed to be a snake bite mark.
