A court has sentenced former Cox's Bazar Municipality chairman Nurul Absar to 5 years in prison in a money embezzlement case. The court of Chattogram Divisional Special Judge Mizanur Rahman gave the verdict on Monday (January 12).
ACC PP Advocate Md. Rezaul Karim Rony said that since the charges were proven based on the testimony of seven witnesses, the court has imposed a five-year rigorous imprisonment, along with a fine equal to the amount embezzled and another one-year imprisonment for non-payment. Since the accused was absconding at the time of the verdict, an arrest warrant has been issued against him based on the sentence warrant.
The case documents reveal that Nurul Absar embezzled Tk 2.9 million 1,000 from the municipality while serving as the chairman of Cox's Bazar Municipality from 1984 to 1989. The ACC filed a case against him in 1991 in this incident. After the investigation, the charge sheet was submitted to the court.
It is worth noting that earlier on Wednesday (January 7), the same court sentenced Nurul Absar to three years in prison in three other cases.
