


A court has sentenced 10 people to life in prison in a case filed in connection with the killing of a policeman in an attack by robbers a decade ago in the Tiger Pass Ambagan area under Khulshi police station in Chattogram city.
The court of Chattogram Divisional Special Judge Mizanur Rahman announced the verdict on Monday (January 12). The convicted accused are - Md. Javed, Nurul Alam, Sumon Mollah, Harun Or Rashid, Tapan Chandra Sarkar, Mintu Das, Arcal alias Russell, Faruk alias Bullet Faruk, Md. Sohel and Md. Babul.
Court bench assistant Mohammad Shahed said that since the charges were proven, each accused has been sentenced to life imprisonment. In addition, each has been fined Tk 25,000. The court has ordered that a total fine of Tk 2.5 lakh be given to the family of the deceased. Five of the convicts were present in court and the remaining five are absconding.
According to the case records, on November 3, 2013, Constable Abdul Qayyum (22) was stabbed to death in front of the DIG bungalow in the Tiger Pass Ambagan area of Khulshi police station.
On that day, the robbers attacked the police when they tried to stop a robbery. Three more policemen were injured in the incident. After the incident, the police filed a case naming 11 people and eight others who were unknown as accused. The court announced the verdict after recording the testimonies of a total of 14 witnesses in this murder case.
The deceased Abdul Qayyum was a resident of Sandwip upazila of Chattogram . He joined the police as a constable on October 6, 2012.
