Uncertainty hangs over Bangladesh’s participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup as the International Cricket Council (ICC) warns of heightened security risks if pacer Mustafizur Rahman is included in the squad.
Youth and Sports Adviser Professor Asif Nazrul revealed today that the ICC’s security department sent a letter to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) outlining three specific factors that could escalate threats during the tournament in India.
According to the Adviser, the ICC cited the following as potential security triggers that presence of Mustafizur Rahman in the national squad. Bangladeshi fans wearing the national jersey in public. Proximity to Bangladesh's national election, which could further inflame tensions.
Speaking at a press conference at the BFF Bhaban, Professor Asif Nazrul labeled the ICC’s stance "unjustified" and "unrealistic."
"If the ICC expects us to drop our best bowler, stop fans from wearing our colors, and delay an election just to play cricket, those are impossible expectations," he said. He further criticized the "aggressive communal atmosphere" in India, stating it has made the environment unsafe for Bangladeshi cricketers.
The Adviser insisted that the ICC must remain neutral and not operate under the influence of any single nation. He reiterated Bangladesh's firm demand to play its matches in Sri Lanka or a neutral venue like the UAE or Pakistan.
"There will be no concessions on the security and dignity of our players," the Adviser concluded, noting that if India cannot guarantee safety for a single player like Mustafizur, they cannot guarantee it for the entire team.
