At least four people, including a local Jamaat-e-Islami leader, a father and his young daughter, and a pedestrian, were killed in three separate road accidents in Sirajganj on Monday evening, according to local police.
The deceased have been identified as Abul Kalam Biswas, Nayeb-e-Ameer of Raiganj Upazila Jamaat-e-Islami and convener of Raiganj Press Club; Abdul Hannan Khan (35) and his 3-year-old daughter Hafsa Khatun from Bahuti village of Sirajganj Sadar upazila; and pedestrian Nur Nabi Hossain (55) from Char Nobipur village in Shahjadpur upazila.
Khorshed Alam, a member of Raiganj Press Club and brother-in-law of the deceased Jamaat leader, said Abul Kalam Biswas was returning home on a motorcycle after attending a Jamaat education camp in Bogura. He lost control of the bike near the Sonka area on the Bogura–Sirajganj highway and hit a road divider. He was critically injured and later died at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura.
Abul Kalam Biswas was also a teacher at Raiganj Mohila Madrasa, a correspondent for the Sonar Bangla weekly, and was appointed as the convener of Raiganj Press Club on August 5, following the fall of the previous executive committee.
In a separate incident, Abdul Hannan Khan was traveling with his wife and two children on a motorcycle toward Sat Tikri in Salonga of Ullapara upazila when an unidentified truck rammed their bike in the Salonga area. Hafsa Khatun died on the spot. Hannan and his wife Brishti Khatun and son Hamza were rushed to Sirajganj General Hospital, where Hannan succumbed to his injuries later that night.
Meanwhile, Hatikumrul Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ismail Hossain reported that in another incident in Kawak Mor area of Ullapara, a cement-laden truck ran over a pedestrian, Nur Nabi Hossain, killing him instantly. The truck overturned on the roadside after the crash. Police have seized the vehicle, but the driver fled the scene.
