The newly appointed Speaker of the 13th National Parliament, Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, and Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal paid their respects at the gravesites of former President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia today. The leaders observed a moment of silence and offered prayers for the departed souls.
Following the ceremony, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed addressed the media, marking the occasion as a milestone for the nation's restored democratic system. "We stand at a historic juncture," he stated. "Having fought in the Liberation War under the leadership of President Ziaur Rahman, it is a solemn duty to honor his legacy and the sacrifices of Begum Khaleda Zia, who was instrumental in reintroducing parliamentary democracy to Bangladesh."
The Speaker highlighted the significance of the recent elections, noting that the public mandate has paved a clear path for democratic governance. To maintain the neutrality of their offices and ensure equal opportunities for both the treasury and opposition benches, both the Speaker and Deputy Speaker confirmed they have resigned from their political party affiliations.
The event was attended by senior officials from the National Parliament Secretariat, including the Additional Secretary and the Sergeant-at-Arms, alongside members of the press.
