A court in Chattogram has sentenced an individual named Abdul Noor to 14 years in prison under the Special Powers Act due to the recovery of government hospital medications from the open market.
On Thursday (November 20), the Fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court of Chattogram, presided over by Judge Begum Sirajam Munira of Chattogram Metropolitan Special Tribunal-8, delivered this ruling.
Abdul Noor (80), the son of Abdul Motaleb, resides in the Dampara area of Chattogram city.
Omar Fuad, the Tribunal Bench Assistant, stated that the tribunal has sentenced the accused, Abdul Noor, to 14 years in prison and an additional 3 months for failing to pay a fine of Tk 10,000, as the charges of selling government hospital medicines in the open market were substantiated by the testimonies of four witnesses. The accused was not present during the verdict announcement, prompting the issuance of an arrest warrant against him.
As per the case file, Abdul Noor was apprehended on March 25, 2013, in front of the main gate of the K.C. Dey Road Cinema Palace, located under the Kotwali Police Station in Chattogram City. At that time, various types of government hospital medicines, which are prohibited from being sold in the open market, were found in the bag he was carrying. He had collected these seized medicines with the intent of black marketing and had kept them in his possession for sale.
Following the investigation, the charge sheet was presented to the court on August 18, 2013. On March 11, 2014, the judge ordered the commencement of the trial by framing charges under Section 25 of the Special Powers Act, 1974.
