After gradually stepping away from international cricket, questions are now emerging about whether Virat Kohli might also be winding down his Indian Premier League (IPL) career. Already retired from Test and T20 internationals, Kohli has yet to commit to the 2027 World Cup, according to BCCI Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar.
Recent reports have intensified speculation about his IPL future. According to Revsports journalist Rohit Juglan, Kohli recently declined a brand contract renewal and suggested that Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) seek an alternative face for endorsement. Analysts believe this may indicate that Kohli is gradually stepping back from the IPL arena.
Further fueling speculation is Kohli’s decision regarding RCB captaincy ahead of IPL 2025. After Faf du Plessis was released, Kohli was offered the captaincy again but declined, recommending Rajat Patidar instead. Under Patidar’s leadership, RCB secured their first-ever IPL title, marking a historic moment for the franchise.
Kohli’s IPL career for 18 seasons, during which he has played 267 matches, scored 8,661 runs, and captained 143 games, both records for RCB. His recent choices—stepping away from leadership, limiting brand engagements, and endorsing a new captain—suggest that Kohli may be preparing to close this iconic chapter of his IPL journey.
