Dr. Faizul Haque, the 10-party alliance candidate for the Jhalakathi-1 constituency, claimed that his recent viral speech regarding "bidi smokers" has unexpectedly increased support for Jamaat-e-Islami by "two crore votes."
Speaking at a reception for Dr. Mahmuda Mitu, joint chief organizer of the National Citizen Party (NCP), in Kathalia on Wednesday, Dr. Haque addressed the social media storm surrounding his previous comments.
Dr. Haque argued that his words were misinterpreted by some but ultimately served as free "marketing" worth millions.
"I said that even if someone is at a tea shop or smoking a bidi, my workers will invite them to support the 'Scale' symbol," he explained. "My goal is that through this invitation, Allah might even help them give up smoking and lead a better life. This speech has reached everyone—from the wealthy to those who may not strictly follow religious customs."
During the event at the Jamaat-e-Islami Upazila headquarters, Dr. Haque emphasized the alliance’s goal to establish a "smart state system" in Bangladesh. He urged supporters to remain cautious yet active on social media, noting that "whatever we do or say goes viral."
He concluded by praising the unity of the 10-party alliance and expressing his gratitude for the hospitality shown by the people of Kathalia.
