The government has reinstated November 7 as "National Revolution and Solidarity Day," declaring it a public holiday once again. Alongside this July 6 has been designated as "Rural Development Day" though it will not be a public holiday.
The decisions were finalized during a cabinet meeting at the Secretariat on Thursday. Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani confirmed the updates during a press briefing later that evening.
The "National Revolution and Solidarity Day" holds significant historical weight, having been officially observed during the tenures of President Ziaur Rahman, President Hussein Muhammad Ershad, and previous BNP-led administrations. The holiday was canceled by the 2006-08 caretaker government and remained excluded from the national calendar by subsequent administrations until now.
In a separate move, the government announced that July 6 will now be observed as "Rural Development Day." This follows a 2024 UN General Assembly initiative, supported by the Prof. Yunus-led interim government to recognize the date globally as World Rural Development Day.
While the day will be officially observed across Bangladesh to highlight agrarian and grassroots progress, offices and educational institutions will remain open.
