The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA) has officially approved uranium fuel loading for the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP).
This decision marks a major milestone for the country’s first nuclear energy project.
BAERA Chairman Mahmudul Hasan confirmed on Thursday that the fuel loading process is expected to be inaugurated by the end of April. While an initial launch was planned for April 7, it was rescheduled to ensure all technical and safety requirements were fully met.
"The decision to proceed follows rigorous checks to ensure every safety protocol is in place," Hasan stated.
Zahedul Hassan, Managing Director of Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL), added that all necessary clearances, including fire safety and international safeguards, have been secured.
Following the fuel loading, the first unit is expected to begin experimental power generation by December. If successful, this trial electricity will be supplied directly to the national grid.
The project, built at an estimated cost of $12.6 billion, features two units with a total capacity of 2,400MW. While the first unit is slated for full commercial operation in early 2027, the second unit is expected to be completed by 2028.
