Science and Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam expects electricity from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant to join Bangladesh’s national grid by late August.
Speaking to journalists at the ICT Tower in Agargaon on Tuesday, the minister emphasized the government's priority to operationalize the heavily invested project promptly.
"If everything goes well, we will supply electricity to the national grid by the end of August," Anam stated. He noted that Russian and Bangladeshi scientists are collaborating round-the-clock, and the massive project remains on schedule.
The first unit of the Pabna-based power plant successfully completed nuclear fuel loading in May. The minister highlighted the financial urgency of the launch, explaining that while Bangladesh is currently paying interest on the project's loans, principal repayments will begin in 2028. Generating electricity within the stipulated timeframe is therefore crucial to managing this economic commitment.
