At least 12 people were injured in a violent clash between BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami activists in Lakshmipur’s Sadar Upazila on Thursday afternoon. The confrontation reportedly began over the collection of National Identity (NID) card details by Jamaat's women’s wing.
The incident occurred at the Beribandh area of Syedpur village under Charshahi Union. Dr. Md. Arman Hossain, the on-duty doctor at Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital, confirmed that several injured individuals from both sides are currently undergoing treatment.
The clash broke out during a Quran recitation program organized by the women’s wing of Jamaat-e-Islami. Tensions escalated when Jamaat organizers reportedly began asking female attendees for their NID cards.
As news of the NID collection spread, local BNP supporters arrived at the scene to protest. The ensuing argument quickly turned into a physical confrontation involving members from both parties.
Jamaat’s Stance: Chandraganj Thana Jamaat Secretary-General, Advocate Rezaul Karim Sumon, alleged that BNP supporters obstructed their religious program and launched an unprovoked attack, injuring five of their activists.
BNP’s Stance: Sadar Upazila (East) BNP Organizing Secretary, Saifu Jjaman Sharif, claimed that Jamaat was illegally collecting signatures and NID photocopies from the public. He stated that BNP supporters were attacked while protesting this suspicious activity.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Rezaul Haque stated that police were dispatched to the village to restore order. "Both groups are currently in a face-to-face position. We have also deployed officers at Sadar Hospital to prevent further violence," he said.
