The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has announced that its acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, will return to Dhaka on December 25.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the announcement to reporters following a meeting of the party's permanent committee.
Tarique Rahman will return on December 25. The party's permanent committee meeting included senior leaders such as Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Nazrul Islam Khan, Moin Khan, Mirza Abbas, and Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, among others.
Tarique Rahman has been residing in London since 2008. He was arrested on March 7, 2007, during the 1/11 caretaker government. He left for the UK on September 11, 2008, for medical treatment after being granted bail.
He became BNP's senior vice chairman in 2009. He was appointed acting chairman in 2018 following the imprisonment of his mother and party chairperson, Khaleda Zia. He has since led the party from abroad.
Tarique Rahman was previously convicted in absentia in five cases and faced approximately 100 lawsuits during the Awami League's tenure.
Crucially, all charges against him were dropped following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5 last year, meaning there are currently no pending cases against him.
