Barcelona suffered a damaging 2-1 defeat away to Girona in a dramatic Catalan derby on Monday, missing the chance to return to the top of LaLiga and leaving Real Madrid in control of the title race.
Barcelona dominated possession and struck the woodwork twice in the first half, with Raphinha hitting the post and Lamine Yamal missing a penalty just before the break. The visitors finally took the lead in the 59th minute through Pau Cubarsi’s powerful header, but Girona hit back almost immediately as Thomas Lemar equalised from close range.
The home side completed a stunning turnaround late on when substitute Fran Beltran scored in the 87th minute, sending the Montilivi crowd into raptures. Barcelona failed to respond, even after Joel Roca was sent off in stoppage time.
The defeat leaves Barcelona on 58 points, two behind Real Madrid, and marks their second consecutive loss in all competitions.
Girona, who had been hovering near the relegation zone, climbed to 12th place on 29 points, reviving their season and dealing a significant blow to Barcelona’s championship ambitions.
