BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir emphasized that holding a free, fair, and neutral election is the only alternative for the nation, warning that failure to do so would increase the chances of fascism returning and harming the nation.
Speaking at a publication unveiling at the National Press Club on Friday, August 29th, the senior leader pointed out that attempts to bring back fascism are ongoing, both from within the country and through international efforts.
He cautioned party leaders against complacency, stating, "Don't think you have come to power. You didn't come to power. There's a lot of conspiracy, there's a lot of conspiracy." He urged the party's rank and file to connect with the populace through good work.
Mirza Fakhrul expressed disappointment with the slow pace of democratic transition but affirmed hope in the people, suggesting that if all political parties move forward, the goal of a democratic transition could be achieved. He noted that while political differences are normal, the current climate has confused the public, raising concerns about the election process.
He asserted that the desired state system is achievable only through a truly free and neutral election. The BNP leader highlighted his party's historical role in reform, crediting Ziaur Rahman with introducing multi-party democracy and press freedom, and Khaleda Zia with establishing parliamentary democracy.
Furthermore, he alleged that certain political parties are spreading false propaganda to mislead the BNP. He stressed that the BNP is a party of positive change, stating, "No one can say that the BNP is a bad thing, it cannot be given to anyone." Concluding his address, he affirmed that the people are ready for change, and the BNP must work to make that change a reality.
The search results indicate that Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has consistently maintained this stance in his recent public appearances, even after the initial August 29th statement. In November 2025, he reiterated that elections are the only path to begin the transition to democracy and reflect the people's aspirations, calling on all parties to support the electoral process ahead of the scheduled polls in the first half of February 2026.
He acknowledged the formation of the interim government but noted that it is still too early to fully gauge if it aligns with the people's aspirations.
He has alleged that certain quarters are intentionally trying to obstruct and delay the national election by introducing various demands, warning against efforts to "split the consensus among anti-fascist forces."
He has consistently stressed that democracy is a continuous process that must be protected daily, requiring strong, independent institutions and a culture of tolerance.
