


The six-day long ‘Annual Research Review Workshop 2024-25’ of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) was inaugurated on Thursday (January 15, 2026) at the Institute’s Headquarters Auditorium in Gazipur.
The Honourable Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Mohammad Emdad Ullah Mian, attended the inaugural ceremony as the Chief Guest. BRRI Director General Dr. Mohammad Khalequzzaman presided over the event. Chairman (Acting) of Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) Md. Osman Bhuiyan, Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC), Dr. Md. Abdus Salam and Director General of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Krishibid Md. Abdur Rahim attended as the Special Guests. FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) Representative in Bangladesh Dr. Jiaoqun Shi, CIMMYT Representative in Bangladesh Dr. Owen Duncan Calvert and IRRI (International Rice Research Institute) Representative in Bangladesh Dr. Humnath Bhandari attended as Guests of Honor. BRRI Director (Research) Dr. Md Rafiqul Islam presented the annual progress and achievement of the institute. Director (Administration and Common Service) Dr. Munnujan Khanam delivered the vote of thanks.
Agriculture Secretary Dr. Mohammad Emdad Ullah Mian said that the overall progress of the country depends on the development of the agricultural sector. He also stressed the importance of developing location-specific varieties and technologies and emphasized the need for collaboration among policymakers, scientists, extension personnel, private sector representatives, farmers’ representatives, and all others involved in agriculture. He also urged all stakeholders to work collaboratively for the advancement of the agricultural sectors.
BRRI Director General Dr. Mohammad Khalequzzaman highlighted that BRRI has been working relentlessly to ensure food security for nearly 180 million people in the country. He noted that BRRI’s research activities are exemplary at the global level and added that the institute has intensified its efforts to meet the nation’s nutritional needs through rice-based research.
Participants from BRRI, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), BARC, DAE, IRRI as well as representatives from various Govt. and non-govt. organizations and universities, attended the workshop. BRRI has developed a total of 121 high-yielding rice varieties, including eight hybrids, many of which are tolerant to adverse environments and enriched with improved nutritional qualities.
