


Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been elected as the 23rd president of Bangladesh, defeating Col. (retd.) Oli Ahmed in the presidential election.
Voting was held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Thursday, Aug. 20. A total of 349 members of Parliament were eligible to vote.
Of them, 343 cast their ballots. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir received 255 votes, while Oli Ahmed, the candidate backed by an 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami, received 88 votes.
Six members of Parliament did not vote.
