The ongoing strike by Bangladeshi cricketers may end on Friday as players softened their demands following a series of internal discussions. The players have moved away from their absolute demand for the immediate resignation of BCB Director M Najmul Islam, proposing a compromise instead.
The cricketers now state they are ready to resume the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) if the process to remove Najmul Islam as a director continues and he issues a public apology for derogatory remarks made against them.
The Cricketers' Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) issued a statement on Thursday night, citing the "interest of the sport" as the reason for their reconsidered position.
"We realize that our women’s team is in World Cup qualifiers, the men’s team has the T20 World Cup ahead, and the Under-19 team is also competing globally," the CWAB stated. "A total strike could adversely affect these teams."
While the BCB has already removed Najmul Islam from his role as head of the Finance Committee, players are demanding: A Public Apology: For derogatory public comments made about the players. Continued Investigation: Assurance that the formal procedure to review his board directorship remains active.
Sources within the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) indicate that while the board is following formal procedures regarding the directorship, Najmul Islam is currently unwilling to offer a public apology.
The BCB has yet to confirm if the BPL matches scheduled for Friday will proceed or how they will address the two matches abandoned on Thursday due to the strike.
