The government has declared 18 March a public holiday, extending the Eid-ul-Fitr vacation for government employees to seven consecutive days.
The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting held at the Secretariat on Thursday (March 5). After the meeting, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj confirmed the decision to journalists.
According to the new schedule, government employees will enjoy a continuous holiday from 17 to 23 March.
Earlier, the government had announced a five-day Eid-ul-Fitr holiday. The schedule included the Eid day on 21 March, with additional holidays on 19–20 March before Eid and 22–23 March after Eid through executive orders.
In addition, 17 March had already been declared a public holiday for Shab-e-Qadr. With the newly added holiday on 18 March, there will now be four consecutive holidays before Eid, followed by Eid day and two more holidays after the festival.
Under the updated schedule, government offices will reopen on 24 and 25 March.
This will be followed by the Independence Day holiday on 26 March and the weekly weekend on 27–28 March, giving government employees additional days off after the Eid vacation.
Officials said the extended break was approved by the cabinet after a proposal was placed before the meeting chaired by Prime Minister Tarek Rahman.
