State Minister for Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources, Iqbal Hassan Mahmud Tuku, has called on citizens to prioritize public transport over private vehicles to conserve energy. The appeal comes amid growing concerns regarding global fuel supply chains disrupted by the ongoing Middle East conflict.
The Minister issued the briefing on Wednesday (March 4) following a meeting with US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, Paul Kapoor.
"The entire world, including Bangladesh, is concerned about ensuring an uninterrupted fuel supply," the Minister stated. "The government is taking every possible step to prevent a shortfall."
Minister Tuku highlighted specific areas for immediate conservation, urging businesses to reduce "unnecessary decorative lighting" in shopping malls. "We are facing a significant challenge. I urge everyone to be economical. Choosing public transport over private cars will significantly reduce our fuel consumption," he added.
Addressing the diplomatic front, the Minister confirmed that Bangladesh has formally requested fuel assistance from the United States. According to Tuku, Assistant Secretary Kapoor will consult with the US administration before providing a formal response.
The Minister concluded that with strict conservation measures, current reserves should sustain the country through the upcoming Eid holidays and the remainder of March.
