Talks between Bangladesh and the European Union (EU) on the Comprehensive Partnership Agreement (CPA) are expected to reach a final stage soon, a senior EU official has said.
Paola Pampaloni, Acting Managing Director for Asia and the Pacific at the European External Action Service (EEAS), made the statement on Wednesday during a courtesy meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka.
The meeting discussed various aspects of Bangladesh–EU relations, including progress on the CPA, the upcoming national election and referendum, prevention of irregular migration, and the expansion of trade and investment. Pampaloni said discussions on the Comprehensive Partnership Agreement began in November 2024 and would further deepen bilateral relations.
She praised the reform initiatives of the interim government and noted that the EU is giving the highest priority to its partnership with Bangladesh as both a political and major trade partner. Reflecting this commitment, the EU will deploy a large, high-level election observation mission for the national election scheduled for 12 February.
In response, Professor Yunus expressed gratitude for the EU’s continued support and said the CPA would further strengthen Bangladesh–EU relations. He reiterated the government’s commitment to holding a free, fair, inclusive, and peaceful election.
Senior officials from both sides were also present at the meeting.
