More than 132 deceased bodies were seen on a street in Rio de Janeiro's Penha favela complex on Wednesday morning, according to a Reuters witness.
The sighting comes a day after what authorities confirmed was the city's most lethal police operation in history, which targeted a major gang.
Rio de Janeiro state officials confirmed on Tuesday that at least 64 people including four police officers were killed in the raids. Residents brought the bodies to the street while searching for missing relatives following the highly fatal operation.
This operation took place just days before Rio is scheduled to host major global events, including the C40 global summit of mayors and British Prince William's Earthshot Prize, both tied to the upcoming UN climate summit, COP30.
Large-scale police operations against criminal groups are a frequent occurrence ahead of major international events in the city.
