Severe floods and landslides have devastated roads, agricultural lands, and educational institutions across Banshkhali. The crisis was reportedly worsened by influential individuals who deliberately closed local sluice gates to protect their private fish and salt enclosures, trapping water and triggering artificial flooding.
During a relief distribution event on Sunday morning at the Anwarul Ulum Madrasa in Chhanua Union, BNP central leader Mofizur Rahman Ashiq demanded immediate government intervention.
"The BNP is a government of the people and will not tolerate injustice. The illegal occupation of enclosures will not continue," Ashiq stated. He warned that if sluice gates are intentionally closed again, the public will hold the culprits directly accountable on the streets. "I urge the administration to take strict legal action against those who create artificial floods, regardless of their influence."
Ashiq distributed the relief on behalf of Profit Share BD, an initiative led by Ambassador Mushfiqul Fazal Ansari to support the disaster-stricken community. Noting the extreme misery caused by the floods, Ashiq emphasized that Profit Share BD acted out of social responsibility and will continue working toward rehabilitating the affected families.
The event was attended by local officials and community leaders, including Assistant Superintendent of Police Mahmudul Hasan, Banshkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Rabiul Haque, former Chhatra Dal central member Abul Kalam Azad, and Upazila Chhatra Dal leader Khaled Jihan.
