Kylian Mbappé made football history on Saturday becoming the all-time leading goal scorer in World Cup history with 22 career goals. Despite his historic milestone 27-year-old French captain endured a bitter night as France fell 6-4 to England in a thrilling third-place playoff.
Mbappé’s brace took his tournament tally to 10 goals, putting him in pole position to win his second consecutive Golden Boot. He currently leads Argentina’s Lionel Messi who sits on eight goals ahead of Sunday's final against Spain.
"I would have preferred not to be the top scorer in history and instead play in the final tomorrow" a disappointed Mbappé said after the match.
The defeat also marked a poignant end to Didier Deschamps historic 14-year tenure as France head coach. Deschamps, who led France to World Cup glory in 2018 and the final in 2022 is widely expected to be succeeded by Zinedine Zidane.
