Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick as Real Madrid beat Real Sociedad 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday in their first home match of the LaLiga season.
Mbappe put Madrid ahead in the 40th minute but Luka Sucic equalized four minutes later. The France forward restored Real's lead on the hour Vinicius Jr added a third in the 68th minute and Mbappe completed his treble with 10 minutes left.
It was also a winning return to the Bernabeu for Jose Mourinho over 13 years after his last home match in charge of the club. Real recovered from a sluggish first half in which fans jeered a disjointed performance to dominate after the break.
"There's always a sense of justice in the boos and the applause, it helps you grow" Mourinho said, praising his team's second-half response.
Sociedad had threatened early with Mikel Oyarzabal denied by Thibaut Courtois and Sergio Gomez firing narrowly wide. Mbappe broke the deadlock with a fine solo finish before Sucic leveled following defensive lapses from Real. After halftime substitute Marc Cucurella energized the side Mbappe and Vinicius took control sealing the win with clinical finishing.
Elsewhere the Tottenham thrashed Charlton 5-1 in the League Cup with new signing Savio scoring on his debut. In Champions League qualifying, Viking, Fenerbahce, AEK Athens and Slovan Bratislava secured league-phase spots. A brawl broke out after Fenerbahce's win at Lyon reportedly triggered when a Fenerbahce player provoked home fans. The league phase draw takes place Thursday.
