The 25th International Conference of the North Indian Ocean Hydrographic Commission (NIOHC), hosted by the Bangladesh Navy, began in Chittagong on Monday.
Navy Chief Admiral M Nazmul Hasan inaugurated the three-day conference as the chief guest.
The event is being attended by the Director of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), representatives from NIOHC member states, and diplomatic, military and civilian officials.
Rear Admiral Mohammad Musa, Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Operations) of the Bangladesh Navy and chairman of both the National Hydrographic Committee and the NIOHC, presided over the conference.
In his speech, the Navy chief stressed the importance of establishing a “National Hydrographer” as an independent hydrographic authority in Bangladesh, similar to other maritime nations.
He said the National Hydrographer would coordinate and oversee the country’s hydrographic activities, ensuring accountability and improved management.
According to him, the initiative would strengthen maritime security by supporting safe navigation for commercial and other sea-going vessels. It would also contribute to blue economy activities and coastal zone management.
During the conference, participating countries presented updates on their hydrographic activities, achievements and future plans. Delegates also discussed regional cooperation, technical support and training in hydrography.
Established in 2002, the North Indian Ocean Hydrographic Commission is one of the 15 regional commissions of the International Hydrographic Organization. Its operational area stretches from the Andaman Sea to the Gulf of Aden.
Representatives from Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and Thailand are attending the conference, along with associate members Australia, France, Oman, Mauritius, Seychelles, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Observers from Russia, Malaysia and Sudan, as well as representatives from international organizations and hydrography-related commercial institutions, are also participating.
Bangladesh is serving as chairman of the NIOHC for the 2025–2027 term.
