Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain has formed six committees to address the city’s worsening waterlogging problem.
The decision came during a coordination meeting with engineers, sanitation officials, and ward-level representatives to strengthen ongoing drainage management efforts.
The mayor instructed officials to urgently identify blocked canals, drains, culverts, and waterlogged hotspots, and take immediate action to restore proper water flow.
The committees will oversee key areas including Hijra Canal, Jamal Khan Canal, Rampur Canal, Guljar Canal, Monohardi Canal, and the Chandgaon–Muradpur zone. Senior officials from the city corporation will supervise overall coordination, while engineering teams and sanitation officers will handle field implementation. Coordination with WASA will also continue to ensure technical support.
The mayor said there is “no room for negligence” in resolving waterlogging and stressed the need to remove construction materials blocking canals and drains.
He highlighted severe waterlogging in areas such as Chaktai, Muradpur, Rampura Canal zone, Azam Pahar Canal area, Gauchia Road, Rupsha Bakery area, Guljar Khal, and Madarbari. He ordered immediate clearance of all obstructions ahead of the monsoon.
“The condition in some areas is very bad. Temporary measures must be taken before the monsoon for public movement, even if further work is needed later,” the mayor said.
He also directed strict monitoring of cleanliness workers across all 41 wards and warned of action against negligence. The city will provide 3,000 raincoats for sanitation workers, and new staff may be recruited if necessary.
Officials present at the meeting included senior engineers, sanitation officers, regional executives, and the mayor’s waterlogging advisor.
