Villagers in Bhangura Upazila staged a heated protest and detained a college principal on Monday, alleging he took BDT 21 lakh in bribes under the guise of providing jobs.
Mofazzal Hossain Sagar, the principal of Khanmarich Technical and Business Management College, was later released from the angry crowd by Bhangura police. The protest, which included more than a hundred locals and four victimized job candidates, involved a human chain where protesters displayed brooms as a sign of grievance.
The protesters alleged that Principal Sagar collected large sums of money from multiple candidates for various positions:
Night Watchman: Two candidates, Limon Hossain and Helal Uddin, claimed they paid BDT 7 lakh and BDT 2 lakh respectively. They alleged the principal ultimately hired a resident from his own hometown for BDT 12 lakh.
Office Staff: Two other victims, Nuruzzaman and Tofail Ahmed, alleged they paid BDT 6 lakh each for Office Assistant and Computer Operator roles in previous recruitment cycles but never received the jobs or their money back.
"He took our money promising jobs but hired others for higher amounts," victim Limon Hossain told reporters. "We demand either the job or our money back immediately."
Principal Mofazzal Hossain Sagar denied all allegations, calling them "false and fabricated." He maintained that the recruitment process was transparent and that the villagers were conspiring against him.
Md. Arifuzzaman, the Bhangura Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and President of the college governing body, stated that the appointments were made through a neutral recruitment test. "I have not received any written complaints regarding bribes. If a formal complaint is filed, we will investigate and take action," the UNO added.
