A police officer in Bhangura Upazila, Pabna, has been accused of beating a man and his wife after failing to locate a suspect currently out on bail. The injured couple is currently receiving treatment at the Bhangura Upazila Health Complex.
The incident occurred around 1:30 am on Thursday (February 26) in Jhabjhabia village, under Ashtamanisha Union.
The injured individuals are identified as Md. Roni Hossain, 25, and his wife, Swapna Khatun, 22.
According to family sources, the police were searching for Roni’s brother, Abdur Rahim Rubel, regarding a cheque dishonor case filed by one Montu Ali. Although a warrant was initially issued, the family claims Rubel secured bail on February 24 and that a copy of the bail order had already been submitted to the police station.
Witnesses stated that a team led by SI Rezaul Karim Reza and SI Subrata, along with 10–12 officers, raided the house. Roni alleged that after Rubel fled the scene, police forcibly entered his neighboring home by breaking a window grill. He further alleged that officers assaulted him and his wife until they lost consciousness. Locals later rescued the couple and took them to the hospital.
However, Bhangura Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mostafizur Rahman denied the allegations of assault.
The OC stated that the police had not received any formal bail documentation and were conducting a regular operation. He claimed the family obstructed police duty and helped the suspect escape. According to the OC, two police officers were also injured during a scuffle and received first aid at the health complex.
