Suraia Zerin Roni, a seasoned political activist from Bogura, has officially taken her oath as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the reserved women’s seat representing Bogura and Joypurhat.
The ceremony took place on Sunday at 9:00 PM at the National Parliament complex. Following the oath, the newly elected MP joined her colleagues in visiting the mausoleums of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
Roni, who serves as the Joint General Secretary of the Bogura District Women’s Party and was a former Vice Chairman of Gabtali Upazila, described her appointment as the "result of years of struggle on the streets."
Her political career has been marked by personal tragedy. In an emotional account, Roni revealed that in 2017, while four months pregnant, she was seriously injured during a police crackdown on a political program. The incident led to the loss of her unborn child and left her unable to conceive again.
"What greater sacrifice can a mother make for politics?" she asked, reflecting on her journey. She also recounted facing multiple arrests and spending 134 days in prison, during which time her mother passed away.
Expressing her gratitude to the party leadership, including Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, Roni pledged to be a strong voice for her constituents.
"I want to work for women’s empowerment, education, healthcare, and the protection of people’s rights," she stated. Residents of Bogura and Joypurhat have expressed hope that her history as a grassroots activist will lead to genuine representation of local issues in the Jatiya Sangsad.
