The government has released over Tk 140 crore as the second installment of its fiscal year 2025-26 allowance for private orphanages. Approved by the Ministry of Social Welfare, the funds will support 116,759 children across 4,209 registered orphanages in all 64 districts.
Shah Mohammad Mahbub, Director General of the Department of Social Services (DSS), confirmed the allocation in a recent office order. Local social service officers have been tasked with distributing the funds according to established guidelines.
The DSS noted that a total of Tk 280 crore was budgeted for private orphanages this fiscal year. Following a first installment of nearly Tk 140 crore, this second release ensures the entire yearly allocation is now in distribution.
Under this program, each eligible child receives a monthly grant of Tk 2,000 for six months (January to June 2026), totaling Tk 12,000 per child. These funds are strictly designated for food, nutrition, and basic living expenses, ensuring disadvantaged children grow up in a secure environment.
To guarantee transparency, distribution must strictly follow the "Government Grant Allocation and Distribution Policy-2014." Field officers have been instructed to monitor the orphanages regularly to ensure the money is being spent accurately.
Because many private orphanages operate on limited budgets, these government grants serve as a vital social safety net. Timely distribution helps these institutions manage daily operating costs while directly improving the lives of thousands of orphaned children nationwide.
