A major initiative to expand healthcare services in northern Bangladesh is underway as the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital (SZMCH) in Bogura moves forward with plans to increase its capacity to 1,500 beds. The initiative is being viewed as a landmark step in strengthening the region's healthcare infrastructure and improving access to advanced medical services for millions of people.
The decision was taken at the first meeting of the hospital's newly formed governing board, where improving the quality and scope of healthcare services was identified as a top priority. The meeting, chaired by State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam, approved the preparation of a Development Project Proposal (DPP) aimed at transforming the hospital into a modern 1,500-bed specialized healthcare facility.
Hospital sources said the institution currently serves a large number of patients from Bogura and neighboring districts every day. However, growing patient demand has put significant pressure on existing infrastructure and bed capacity. Officials believe the planned expansion will help reduce overcrowding and ensure improved access to quality healthcare services.
As part of the initiative, 30 additional dialysis machines are expected to be installed during the current fiscal year, offering much-needed relief to kidney patients across the region. Plans are also underway to establish a state-of-the-art cancer center and several specialized and super-specialized medical units, which are expected to reduce the need for patients to travel to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
