Bangladesh Police Headquarters has issued a nationwide high alert over potential unrest ahead of the banned Awami League's founding anniversary on June 23.
According to intelligence reports, Awami League activists may attempt to hold unauthorized public gatherings, raise flags at party offices, and bring out processions. Authorities warn these activities risk triggering violent clashes with the National Citizen Party (NCP) and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
To ensure public safety, DIG (Confidential) Md. Kamrul Ahsan issued an urgent directive on Thursday, June 18, instructing all police units to remain vigilant. The letter also cautioned that activists might respond aggressively if law enforcement intervenes. Heightened Security and Recent Incidents
The Police Headquarters has directed all Metropolitan Police Commissioners and Range DIGs to escalate field-level surveillance and take strict preemptive measures.
Despite the ban, Awami League activists have recently tried to spark unrest by holding brief "flash processions" and distributing pamphlets nationwide. On Thursday, a crude bomb exploded during one such procession in Dhaka’s Mohakhali area, resulting in three arrests. Later that same day, the party’s youth affiliate, Jubo League, staged a similar sudden procession near Ganabhaban.
Police assure the public that the situation is under close observation. Field-level patrols and intelligence gathering have been significantly increased to swiftly suppress any attempts at sabotage or violence, ensuring everyday public safety is not compromised.
