Police and rescue teams have recovered the bodies of two ninth-grade students who drowned in the Jamuna River in Pabna’s Bera upazila. The victims who were cousins went missing on Monday afternoon while bathing in strong currents.

The deceased are Binoy Roy, 15 from Tangail's Nagarpur upazila and Prabhat Sarkar, 15 from Gazipur Sadar.

According to police and local sources, the teenagers were visiting a relative in the Khanpura Madhyapara area under Aminpur police station. On Monday, they went bathing at the nearby Natakhola point of the Jamuna River and were swept away. When immediate rescue efforts by locals failed, the police, fire service and a specialized diving team launched a joint search operation.

Following extensive efforts, divers recovered Prabhat’s body on Tuesday afternoon near the Daspara point in Kazirhat. While the official operation was paused at night due to poor visibility also local residents continued searching using small boats. Binoy’s body was eventually found floating further downstream in the Bawa area at around 3:00 pm on Wednesday. Naval police immediately dispatched a speedboat to retrieve the body.

The tragic incident has cast a deep shadow of grief over the local community. Kazirhat Naval Police Outpost In-Charge (OC) Arvind Sarkar confirmed the recoveries, stating that the bodies will be handed over to their grieving families following standard autopsy procedures.
