Abul Kalam Azad MP Opens Sheikh Beel Canal Excavation in Paikgachha

Alhaj Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Member of Parliament for Khulna-6, formally inaugurated the excavation of the Sheikh Beel canal in Haridhali Union on Monday morning.

The project is a joint initiative of the non-governmental organizations Uttaran and Solidaridad. The ceremony was presided over by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Wasiuzzaman Chowdhury.

Local officials and development experts expressed high hopes for the project. The excavation is expected to resolve Waterlogging with efficient drainage will prevent seasonal flooding in the Beel area. Improved water flow will allow farmers to increase agricultural yield. The restored canal will serve as a vital habitat for local fish species.

Uttaran and Solidaridad have an extensive track record in water management, having successfully excavated 52 canals across 12 upazilas in Bangladesh.

The inauguration was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Fazle Rabbi, Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Saikat Mallik, and Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Ekramul Hossain. Local political leaders, union parishad representatives, and police officials were also present to mark the start of the work.
